Time Travel continues: 1960's

  

Everything wasnt all groovy back in the 1960s and we are learning a lot about the decade that seems to have shaken up more than a just a generation of young Americans.  Moving from what we learned about the 1950s we are now heading into the 1960s.  In talking about and researching the decades I decided that we are going to go about midway through the 60s and finish off our week with the sock hop.  Then when we return to our decades theme weeks (after Egypt next week) we will kick off with late 60's and 70's.  Here are a few good book resources you can get from Amazon or from your library..

 

    

Similar to last week, we will prepare a meal reminescent of the era, create a timeline, watch a show (shows) that were on air during the time and we will complete craft and art projects.  This decade offers some fun..GI Joe, Barbies, Etch a Sketch, the Easy Bake Oven and Skateboards and hitting the scene was the Flinstones, Alvin and the Chipmunks, the classic musicals, the Beatles, and more Elvis. Of course we will dive deep into history, the civil rights movement and remember JFK and the events leading up to his assassination.

 

 

 

 

We have found KC Library of Cultural History to be a great resource and starting point for our research.

The people history  is another great resource, the kids love comparing the prices of what things cost back then compared to what they do now.

Capturing the best of summer..

With all the fun you are having you may want to capture, record, and remember all these great moments. And what better way than with photographs and even better with scrapbooks... I hope you are living each day this summer to the fullest.  With our 1950s week last week, I was surprised how much I was reminiscing about some of my favorite summer memories.  Even though the 1950's was before my time, there is a great notaligic feel to that era.  Summer is magical and enchanted in a childs eyes and I hope my post last summer of 100 things to do with your kids still inspires you to be active, have fun and enjoy every single second you can while your kids are young.   I was wishing I had photos of the memories I was reliving with my own children to go with the stories we shared.. and it fueled my purpose and desire as a photographer and scrapbooker to keep alive the fun of my kids childhood through images and written words.

Lets start with taking photos, you dont have to be a professional photographer, you dont have to have an expensive dslr... check out some of kodak's point and shoots pretty reasonably priced and can easily work for on the go photos.. The most important part is that you take the photos.. Maureen over at Spell Outloud interviewed my favorite photographer, photography teacher, and luckily my friend Katrina at the beginning of the summer.  Check out that post to get great tips, tricks and ideas for capturing your summer this year.  You can also purchase Katrina's lessons at Designerdigitals, and if you own a dslr and have been stuck on auto for as long as I was before reading it, it is so well worth it..

Maureen also interviewed notable scrapper, Paula Gilarde in search of scrapbooking your summer ideas. Paula shares ideas of how to incorporate memorabilia into your pages as well.

I really enjoyed reading a post over at Ali Edwards Blog last week with a guest poster May Flaum.  If you need starters for the journaling, make sure you read this post. Several great ideas I am already starting to incorporate around here so I dont forget the details of our summer.

We have multiple books going on around here at any one time. All 4 kids have their own book and as I create a scrapbook page, I just upload it to their file at Shutterfly.  We also have a family book which we add pages to all the time.  And then we will do seasonal books as well.  This year the kids are old enough to create their own pages and are doing so with paper scrapbooking supplies and we will have much smaller but really great little books of their favorite memories from this summer.  I think it is very important to involve them in the process of the record keeping, it helps validate their feelings and roles within the family and it also preserves what was real and true to them.  They will have something very tangible from their childhood and when afforded the opportunity to hold pages they have created with images they created or captured it is sure to bring a spark to their eye.  Make sure you involve your kids in the process this summer...

Chocolate Malts, Hula Hoops and I love Lucy...

We are starting off getting a clear idea of what life was like in the 50s.  We have concentrated on some of the historical aspects, but for the most part the kids are really fascinated in what the average daily life was like.  We have studied the architectural changes and the way the suburbs blossomed during this time.  Enjoyed learning about the new vehicles of the time, the tv shows, and the activities that kids did when they werent in school.  We have some fun ideas for the rest of the week and since I am running short on time I am going to go ahead and give you an overview and then find time at the end of the week to link up photos of what we have done...

For a fun treat you can enjoy LISTENING to the radio of the past at AM 1710 Antioch Old-Time radio..and here are a few of the advertisements that we have enjoyed looking over...

         

   

Notice the truth in advertising on that box of cereal "The SUGAR cereal with a fruit flavor" I might just have to visit a cereal aisle again in my life (we swore that stuff off a while ago).. to see if that is how they still advertise.. just made me laugh when I noticed it!

Tomorrow we will assemble our 1945-1959 time lines.  These are big cardboard panels and we have been printing photos etc, from the internet, of the things we have found significant.  Each of the kids are going to help make a commercial for a product that would have been introduced during the 50s.  They will be using the following commercials as examples... (oh they crack me up)

We have a 1955 Better Homes and Garden Kids Cookbook

  

 

   

 

 

 

It is filled with simple yet nostalgic recipes, and the photos are just adorable.  We will be preparing a meal completely from recipes in this book.  And one thing I have discovered is that I am guilty of being TOO hands on in the kitchen.. My oldest, at the age of 10 can easily follow a recipe, has often helped me in preparing meals, but I can say that he has never flown solo on more than simple things like toast and sandwiches... so he has selected what he would like to prepare, he has purchased the ingredients he will need and will be making the dish entirely on his own (with the exception of HEAT - I will be pulling the pans off the stove or out of the oven).. hard habit to break!

 

We will enjoy more games, this time playing with Mr. Potato Head, Silly Putty, Slinkys, Model Airplanes, Wooly Willys, Kick the Can, Telephone, Hopscotch, Jacks, Pick Up Sticks to name a few....  On Thursday we are going to live sun up to sun down without the modern conveniences of the last 50-60 years.. No microwave, no color tv (thanks to our library they will have I love Lucy, Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best and the Lone Ranger should they wish to watch the tv..but they will not have a remote control either...  We will "dress" for dinner, and probably having a blast during the whole day. etc... I hope to tweet about it as the day goes by....We will be making poodle skirts and preparing for our 50s party on Friday, too.

 

Something that has provided a lot of information was asking those who were growing up during this time for some first hand experiences..   My older kids have written about a dozen questions and will be conducting interviews with some family and friends to get more details and a better grasp of life at this time from those who were living it..

 

I didnt post a list of supplies earlier in the week because I wasnt exactly sure... The biggest activity we did complete so far was studying the art of the decade and trying our hands at Abstract Expressionism... So if you have paint and paper you are set.... Other than that I had been buying up vintage goodies for a while (check your goodwill).. we have a record player and some 45s for our party on Friday, I did have to buy the Woody Willys, Silly Putty, a few hula hoops, and some slinkys...most everything else we had.. Oh did you know the slip in slide first came out in the 50s... that is a 105 degree day life saver!

The time machine begins...

Today we roll back time to mid 1940's and spend the week reliving history during a 15 year  time span.

So how do we make this time period relavent for kids between 3 and 10, we relive as much as we can.  We explore WWII, creating timelines, discovering weapons of war, aircraft and honor those who sacrificed for our very freedoms.  We set up a mach factory and 'play' with the concept of an assembly line.  We practice rationing and listen to broadcasts from the era.  We can watch little rascals (in b/w). 

For the 50's we dive in a little deeper.... Again focusing on major historical events (timelines posted later in the week).  Civil Rights movement, Automobiles, Telephone lines, Space Travel, what things cost, optimism....But here is an overview of activities, kids toys, etc that we will see and play with this week.

TV shows:

Howdy Doody, Flash Gordon, Lassie, I Love Luy, Fran and Ollie, Father Knows Best.

Music:

Listened to on a vintage Record Player, is there anything quite as nostalgic as that vinyl sound and occasional skipped beat.  Carl Perkins, Ritchie Valens, Johnny Cash and of course Elvis Presley and his impact on the youth and the hip swaying Rock n' Roll.

Toys and Activities:

Legos, Army Men, Matchbox Cars, Mr. Potato Head,  Model Airplanes, Jump Ropes, Kick the Can, Hula Hoops, Silly Putty, Slip and Slides and Barbies...

  

Making rootbeer, having a Malt, listening to a Baseball game on the radio, creating our own abstract expressionism as we discover the changes in art and architecture, making poodle skirts to name a few.  We will finish our week with a fun celebration where the kids will share everything they have learned about this time in our history with their friends who will be invited over for a sock hop!!! 

Preparing for this weeks theme has me feeling nostalgic even though this was decades prior to my arrival, there is just something about this decade that calls to me, and apparently that is a common feeling thanks to television shows that portray this time in a childs life with such idealism...  And I found one article online that really captured my imagination and thoughts so well, its really worth a read.

Italy, Ice Cream and a Give Away...

Today was art day in our Italy week.  We browsed many famous works from Florence and Rome.   We made a trip to the local library and read up some more on Italy and the Renaissance.  Here are just a few of the facts we focused on today....

The Renaissance began in Florence Tuscany in the 14th century.

We studied the works of Michelangelo, Donatello, Botticelli, Leonardo de Vinci, and Raphael. 

Architecture changed from a Gothic pointed arch to more of a round arch seen in most of Italy's structures.

During this time Italy consisted of 250 seperate states.

Of course, we spent a large amount of time on an art project which the kids really disliked.. So why did we continue the project - well I am not sure any kid would enjoy the process, but I am fairly certain my kids wont forget who Michelangelo is or HOW he painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. My kids, after laying on their backs under the dining room table, cant imagine painting that way for over 4 years...

Using a sketch of Michelangelo's Delphes Sylphie from Enchanted Learning we taped papers on the underside of our table and the children laid there with colored pencils.  It didnt take long before the kids started complaining, and each time they did I pulled out our book and we read some more about the process and about Michelangelo the artist as well.  The younger two kids were allowed to simply draw, and I was pleasantly surprised when my youngest girl (6) went and got her picture Bible and tried herself to draw a scene from Genesis.

Domani andiamo a Firenze e Roma

We are excited about our journey tomorrow, into Florence and Rome, following the life work of Michelangelo and other notables among the Italian artists.  But you will have to come back and see all of the activities we have planned tomorrow.  I just wanted to share a few of the highlights from our visit to Venice today.  I have to say the kids were so curious about the "floating" city.  We read some of our books, explored via the internet all that makes Venice unique and notable.  Of course we started our day with some yummy doughnuts using our pizza recipe and following along with Giada's Italian Doughnut Recipe...

We practiced common phrases in Italian today...here are just a few from our list.  My oldest spend quite a bit of time searching phrases and writing them down in his journal today.. I loved hearing him practice Happy Birthday in Italian.  We are still working on our pronunciations, but the kids do sound so much better than they did (we did) on day one.

Stiamo andando a Venezia.

We had a slower start to our activities today, and that is okay, I like summer to be flexible and relaxed but we are enjoying learning more about Italy.  Today it was pizza and The Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Here are a few of the finds from taday..

Italy from the Inside Blog What I loved about this blog are the videos for the kids.  My kids loved watching the children saying the words in Italian, we would pause the videoblog psoting and try to repeat the words in ITaly.  Such a rich source of information on such a fun level for the kids (as well as for my reading this evening.)

Italy Guides   A completely interactive giude from so many areas of Italy.  Today we walked around the Leaning tower of Pisa using this interactive map.  Each map has a wonderful description and historical information along with the great visuals.  The kids and I read from the various pages and they really oooh'd and aaaaw'd over the various sights we were able to see thanks to this virtual tool.  I have to say that the internet really brings these far off lands into your home in such a different way than the books did when I was a child.  Even I felt as if we were there taking a 360 degree tour around the Leaning Tower of Pisa.  Stay posted for a graet idea of keeping this experience alive after the week (or unit) of study is over.

Learning Numbers in Italian since the images on the site linked are copywritten I created my own guide for you to be able to download and use for help as your children learn Italian.  Similar to the color sheet we printed up yesterday, we printed this out and then I had the kids go throughout the house and find the number of objects to match the number in Italian.  Then as they brought the items to me, we said the word in Italian together.

We are practicing our house words too, having those printed out and taped around the house on things like doors, tv, windows, bathroom, etc.  It has been fun to hear a child here or there say the word when the are near one of those flashcards.

We made pizza today using my favorite pizza recipe, so I decided to share it here.  I included photos yesterday of the mixing of the dough etc so I wont repeat those, but I will share what the finished pizza looked like..

Obviosuly this pizza was topped with fresh from the garden tomatoes, basil, some fresh mozzarella and kalamata olives.  We made the sauce too,  a mix of crushed tomatoes and herbs.  The only problem we ran into was we didnt make enough.  Here is the pizza recipe thanks to my friend Erin.

1 3/4 cups warm water (100°F to 115°F)
2 tablespoons sugar
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 tablespoon teaspoons salt
1/4 cup olive oil
5 cups King Arthur All Purpose Flour

Mix warm water, sugar and yeast and let sit until yeast activates. Add 1 cup
of flour and mix. Add oil and salt. Then add as much of the addition flour
as needed to make a elastic dough (I stop when it doesn't seem to want any
more flour). Cover and let rise as long as you need. You Can use almost
immediately or later in the day or put in fridge and use later that night
(if refrigerated take out at least an hour before you want to use)

Bake at 475 on a cornmeal dusted cookie sheet for 15-18 minutes.

 

We also made salt clay today so we could make our own leaning tower of Pisa.  It didnt quite give us the result we had wanted, but it was fun none the less.  Tomorrow my oldest has asked if he could try his hand at a lego structure from Italy.  Of course I was delighted, so he spent some time tonight reading through and looking over many of the historic structures in Italy and I cant wait to see what he picked and how he does with this project.

Non parlo molto bene italiano.

It is true, I dont speak Italian very well.  But we had a blast discovering a new language today.   Below are some of the activities we completed today as we started out on our Italian adventure.  I had a friend email me today and asked WHY I did these "units" with my kids.  I know in the middle of her email she was not asking me this question with ill-intent, but while I was responding I kind of felt like I was justifying my summer plans, and I didnt like that.  I hope to simply offer my kids a chance to expand their horizons, to think outside the box, to step away from the computer and tv, to stir their imagination and foster their creativity.  Thats it and it may look different for each us when we do things with our kids.  My kids happen to enjoy our theme weeks during the summer, they are apart of every aspect of the planning phase and the execution phase.  We as a family enjoy learning and growing our minds to include other cultures, other countries, and new horizons, we hope you enjoy the journey we are on.

Today we looked at the globe and found Italy, identified surrounding countries and bodies of water.  We talked about the "boot" we were looking at and then we looked through the encylopedia and read about Italy and touched on some historical aspects of the country.  The kids then found the flag in the book and colored their own Italian flag.  (I guess we could have just turned on the World Cup, lol).

 Here is a matching sheet we did as we practiced saying our colors in Italian today.. The kids cut the words out and then matched them, we played against each other in a race format to see who could properly identify and match their English color words with the Italian color words.

One of the things we are is flexible and today we had a fun surprise visitor and spent a long time catching up with her, so we didnt get to as many things as we had on our chart, and that was (is) fine.  What we did, was fun - it included all the kids (ages 5-10).  I was so happy to see how active the 5 year old was, too..tried so hard to sound out each new sound of this beautiful language, colored his little heart on on his flag...

 

We had fun making dinner tonight, fresh homeade garlic bread, pasta and a delicious new sauce we picked up from a specialty market straight from Italy... We usually make our pasta and pasta sauces, but when the kids saw this pasta and sauce and that it was from Italy (being shown during a cooking demonstration) there was no turning back, so I obliged and it was actually very good...

 

 

(just realized I didnt take pictures of the kids flags today - but really its a basic flag, lol you can imagine that there are 4 red, white and green colored pages here...)

 

In addition to our THEME weeks, we also have a "summer fun jar"  the kids all wrote down or told me a few things they would like to do over the course of the summer, so I then used the fabulous digital supplies at

Designerdigitals.com to create little note strips with each of the kids ideas.  These were then cut in strips, and rolled and tied with ribbon before placing in our summer fun jar. 

 

On Monday, we pull out one from our jar, and sometime during the next week, the kids are surprised with the treat that had been written down.  One fun thing we have added to our summer fun jar this summer is the aspect of serving.  I feel it is so important to teach our kids to serve the community in which they live..to help those in need..to be of service to others.. So on the back of each strip of paper is a service project, and it has to be completed before we can enjoy the activity on the front.  (For example, the kids chose Go Fishing and on the back it says pick up litter at the fishing pier)  So that is actually a service we get to complete while enjoying our family activity.  I would love to hear how you get your family involved in your neighborhoods and communities.
