This is not a normal Summer week so its a great place for us to start with a few days to get into a routine around the house. give the kids a chance to enjoy their new freedom of staying up a tad later and sleeping in a little later (though this wont happen any time soon - they are all early risers around here).
I was trying to find a way to make this post reader friendly each week - so I am going to post the schedule and then below will follow with the details... hope that works for you.
One of the first things we are doing is establishing a routine of service this summer. Kids in general these days are so self focused that it just saddens me. I hope that this summer is a turning point for my kids, a summer that they can be impacted personally by serving the needs of others first. So, first thing this summer, we are heading to a local shelter to volunteer... still working out details on what this will be and how time extensive it will be - but suffice it to say its a priority that we spend time this summer serving others needs. The kids will each have to come up with a task to do for someone else, also.
My kids have school for 3 days this week so Wednesday after school with be an end of the year party with a few friends. I plan to make these:
Bakearella's Bikini Beach Bear Cupcakes
Then we will have our traditional movie night with all their favorite treats.
Thursday we will work on our routine:
wake/breakfast
morning routine/ clothes, brush teeth, make beds, etc.
AM Family reading
Outdoor craft/activity
Free play
Lunch / clean up
Group Craft / Activity
Academic Reinforcement
Free play
Group Experiment/Science Project
Cooking lesson (making dinner together)
----we will visit the library to pick up the following books:
Keeping A Nature Journal this is a great resource
for getting the kids star
ted with their own nature journals which we will a
dd to each week.
The Keeping Quilt this is a way of introducing their first summer craft, sewing, I will be teaching the kids to sew, knit, and needlepoint this summer.
The Happiest Tree this is a way of introducing yoga to the kids, its something I enjoy and I am hoping it is an effective way of introducing this idea and opening them up to the idea of yoga being a part of our daily routine now.
Here are a few more of our books we will be getting:
Moses goes to a Concert (reading this as an introduction to teaching sign language to the kids this summer)
What Illustrators Do? (one of a series including What Authors Do?, specifically for my dd who has told me this is what she wants to be when she grows up)
Draw Me A Star by Eric Carle
Our outdoor crafts will be deveoping certain things this first week/weekend....
check out this store:
I love every thing they offer. One of the things on my list is the
Here is a website about wildflowers:
And since I will be teaching all about navigating in the woods, etc. we will venture into
Art projects getting a head start this week includes:
we will make a trip to the craft store for our supplies - I will post pics later of our summery finds.
we will also make a trip to the hardware store - as its time my 9 yr old learns the basics of building a few things... his project this week will be to design his dads Fathers Day gift (a charging station).
once designed - he will take measurements and come up with his own supply list. He will prepare the wood by sanding, he will stain the wood, screw the pieces together, fill the holes with putty, etc.... but in the end he will have gained lots of practical experience and his dad will have a great fathers day gift.
Academic Reinforcements comes in the way initially of setting up our summer study boxes:
each box has pencils, colors, papers, assignment folders, flash cards, etc. I have been to the district web site and printed off the state mandatory skills assestments brochures, and the sight words, etc. So all our work will be geared to reinforcing what they learned this year - but also preparing them for what is coming up next year. At the beginning of each week we will discuss the assignments for that week, and have daily alloted time for their study boxes. A lot of their reinforcement will come from hand on activities which is something they sorely miss being in the public school system, but since I am responsible for their education, not some teacher in a district following some state guidelines, we will have a ton of field trips, lots of observing, testing, applying, studying, discovering - all on our own....more on this later.
We wont do any science experiments this week - as its a short week - and our time is filling up fast.
Each day the kids will all participate in preparing the family meal. They will learn about cleaning the vegetables and fruits, we will talk about the importance of the balanced meal, setting the table, how meal components go together, etc. this is a whole class I have actually been wanting to teach as a summer camp for a few years - so my kids will get all this hands on first.

I know this is a lot at first - and I hope you have red to the end and found something useful here. This summer is an adventure for us and I look forward to helping my children continue to grow and learn during these months away from a formal classroom. So much of everyday life provides much more than they can ever learn in a formalized setting and we are embracing that head on this summer. Hope you enjoy our adventure!
