Okay, so I have finally come up with a little system that works for me and I thought I would share it. I love a clean and well organized home and I cant wait to get organized (er. unpacked) so I can continue in a routine that works. I have always done things like baseboards and window sills with regluarity - just one of those things with little kids that is necessity (not that it isnt otherwise, mind you). But, right now the chaos of boxes and unpacking and moving things from one room to another has consumed my thoughts and time and I cant stand if that means the general household responsibilities are put to the wayside in the meantime - and lately they have been. But part of my mission this year is to routine life, put things in order, to simplify it. So - first order of business is keeping up the cleanliness while I deal with the clutter and unpacking - so I give myself a power hour each day... Thats it - just an hour - everyone can do that, right... kids eating lunch or watching a show, or napping if you are lucky (which I am not).
So, I gather the supplies for the hour - today is Thursday so we will start here:
I have the mini vac, dusters, bathroom cleaning supplies, windex and new plug-ins. To start the hour - I go to all bathrooms - open lids and coat with toilet cleaner, spray down sinks remove all rugs to outside. Then I empty all trash, and put cleaner in sinks, tubs and around toilet and basins - this soaks, I go do dishes and wipe kitchen counters, head back to bathrooms clean toilets, wipe out and down sinks and basins, vacuum up bath floors, mo (or clean floors) windex mirrors - baths done, on my way back around house - dust all surfaces, before putting up supplies - I vacuum up the entry and mop, thats it - power hour over - house is cleaner and smells better.
So on Monday I pretty much repeat this same schedule.
Tuesdays and Fridays:
Start load of laundry, grab vacuum, windex, dusting supplies. Heading to game room, everything is sorted to make sure its in its proper place, pick up each kids room - strip sheets on Tuesday - add to laundry pile that gets done while working on upstairs. Switch out laundry - fold and put in bins for each kid. Dust and vacuum kids rooms. Coming downstairs - vacuum stairs, dust sills, baseboards, electronics, vacuum downstairs - go switch out laundry - fold and put up - or remake beds. Vacuum downstairs - DONE. Of course laundry is an ever evolving task that happens around here daily - and the best way to maintain sanity for my keeping up with it - is the bins I put on the shelving units - each one for a kid, one for socks, and one for the master bedroom/bathroom... As soon as the dryer is finished - everything in it gets folded and placed in that childs bin - or other bin.... Then when I am ready for that childs room- I grab their bin put away their clean clothes and put an empty bin back in the laundry room. Its a time saver - and it keeps me from leaving a heap of unfolded clothes from getting put on the couch, shuffled to the bed, accidently pushed to the floor - ending up in the need to wash pile before it had ever gotten dirty or worn.
so that's my power hour - literally an hour a day and lot of stress relief.
I have myself a little copy on order and can't wait to see what great ideas I can get from the Pottery Barn Storage & Display book. I cant wait to be unpacked and living daily in simplicity and organization.
Here is another site I have heard of and been sent to to a few times by friends who are all looking for the same thing a way to stay on track and to create a beautiful and clean home. Its an adventure that never ends - embrace it - and tackle little things - and most importantly - dont stress - good grief life has enough stuff to keep us worried- and its a choice to just move to action and be productive in creating the life we want to live.
